Jahiah T. Gordon
Jahiah T Gordon is a sophomore Foreign Languages and International Trade (FLIT) student, and one of this year’s recipients of the Mary Eleanor Buschek Travel Award. This award provides funds for students to gain a deeper grasp of their chosen language(s) through the immersive experience of traveling abroad. Jahiah has already been exposed to many languages by growing up in the Chicago area, but this will be her first opportunity to spend an extended time surrounded by native speakers of a language that is foreign to her.
The idea of applying for scholarships on top of the workload students take on can seem daunting, but it is often a much less painful experience than anticipated. Jahiah recounted her process.
“The instructions were pretty clear, and I applied using the SIU General Scholarship application which made the whole process a breeze.”
A degree in LCIS can prepare you for a wide range of positions and careers. The future is yours to make, with the limit being the bounds of your imagination.
“There are a lot of different paths I'm thinking about. I'd like to go to graduate school (maybe even overseas), but I'd also like to have a career in the more global side of the government sector. I think that working for the CIA or the FBI would be very cool. Ideally, I'd like to travel the world for a while.”
