Scholarships

Several scholarships and awards are available to outstanding undergraduate students within SIU's Sociology program. They include: the Jerome M. Mileur Scholarship, the Dr. Willie Pearson, Jr., Academic Excellence in Sociology Scholarship; the Louis and Monica Petroff Memorial Scholarship; the Baer Scholarship in Sociology; and the Outstanding Sociology Paper Prize.


Jerome M. Mileur Scholarship

The Mileur scholarship is open to incoming freshman applicants who are graduates of an Illinois high school, and are U.S. citizens who declare a major in Sociology (or other program within the College of Liberal Arts [CoLA]). The minimum award should be $5,000 for the school year and should be renewable for up to three additional years on the conditions that the student:

  1. maintains a grade point average of a "B" or better
  2. is making normal progress toward the degree
  3. continues to be a major in Sociology (or other CoLA program)
  4. maintains an honorable record of personal conduct

Dr. Willie Pearson, Jr., Academic Excellence in Sociology Scholarship

This award is funded by a generous gift from Dr. Willie Pearson, Jr., a 1981 alumnus of SIU’s PhD program, to promote academic excellence in the field of sociology and to benefit students pursuing studies in sociology.

  • Awarded annually to an outstanding student majoring in sociology. Award based on academic excellence.
  • Award amount varies.

Louis and Monica Petroff Memorial Scholarship

This award is shared by Sociology and English, in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Petroff.

Baer Scholarship in Sociology

This award is funded by David Baer, a 1973 alumnus of SIU’s Criminal Justice Program, now CCJ. The scholarship is in memory of his wife, Cheryl, a 1972 SIU BA alumnus in Sociology, and mother, Naomi.

  • The annual award is intended to help offset the cost of college for students enrolled in the Sociology program.
  • Award amount varies.

Outstanding Sociology Paper Prize

Undergraduate students who either major or minor in sociology may submit a paper from a sociology course to be in considered for this annual award.

  • The due date is in the middle of March.
  • Faculty members act as judges for the paper competition.
  • Award amount: $250
