Honors & Awards
Anthropology faculty and graduate students have a distinguished record of research, publication, and teaching that is recognized by numerous awards at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Athrophology is a campus leader in the number of Outstanding Scholars/Distinguished Professors and Outstanding Dissertation Awardees. This record stretches from the very first group of University Distinguished Professors (1982) and first Outstanding Disseration Award (1989) to among the most recent in both categories. A number of our faculty have been recognized as Outstanding Teachers, continuing our strong commitment to the teacher-scholar model of bringing cutting edge research into the classroom. In addition, a number of our faculty have been awarded the Delta Award for excellence in writing about Southern Illinois.
SIU OUTSTANDING SCHOLARS and DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORS
Seven members of Anthropology have been recognized as SIU Outstanding Scholars/Distinguished Professors and two as Outstanding Teachers:
- Carroll L. Riley - 1982, one of 1st group of University Distinguished Professors
- Jerome Handler - 1986, University Outstanding Scholar and Distinguished Professor
- George Gumerman - 1989, University Outstanding Scholar and Distinguished Professor
- Robert Corruccini - 1994, University Outstanding Scholar and Distinguished Professor
- Prudence Rice - 1997, University Outstanding Scholar and Distinguished Professor ( the first and only woman to receive this campus-wide award)
- Jane Adams - 2003, Outstanding Faculty Member in the Core Curriculum; 2004, Outstanding Teacher in the College of Liberal Arts
- Izumi Shimada - 2007, University Outstanding Scholar and Distinguished Professor
- David Sutton -2008, Outstanding Teacher in the College of Liberal Arts
- Jonathan Hill - 2011, College of Liberal Arts Outstanding Scholar
