LINGUISTICS: The study of language as a human activity
Linguistics students at SIU Carbondale study the sounds of language, how words are built, how sentences are constructed, and what words and sentences mean. We also study how language is learned and processed in our minds and brains, how it is used in social-cultural contexts and how it changes over time.
It's no wonder Linguistics makes its home in the College of Liberal Arts, which also houses Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Foreign Languages & Literatures, English and History. Our program breaks boundaries to work with all of these fields and more to give our students a holistic understanding of the discipline, and our graduates emerge with a multidimensional depth and clarity to their studies that connects them to their unique goals.
