OUTSTANDING JUNIORS 2022

SIU Taegan CarpenterTaegan Carpenter

Hello,

My name is Taegan Carpenter and I am a freshman Anthropology and Chinese major with a minor in Spanish. I am interested in learning about other cultures and hope to one day be fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and Spanish so that I can communicate with people from all around the world. In the past year, I have participated in Chinese club, Spanish Table, and SIU's ROTC program. Last December, 2021, I traveled to Egypt with Dr. Hahn from the psychology department and was able to write an anthropological paper under the guidance of Dr. David Sutton about how female sexuality has manifested the role of women in ancient Egypt versus modern Egypt. I showcased my research at the Honors Symposium in the middle of April 2022. Next school year, I will spend an academic year in Taiwan thanks to winning the Boren Scholarship, where I will be learning Mandarin as well as being immersed in the local culture. I hope to write an anthropological paper on my experience there as well.

After I graduate, I will pursue a career in the federal government where I hope to combine my language knowledge and anthropology background to work in international relations and/or federal security. Eventually, I would like to pursue a position as a foreign ambassador.

Above is a picture of me during my time in Egypt last December, 2021.
