Gwendolyn Conrad Brackett & Isaac Parsons Memorial Scholarship

Current Award Information

Gwendolyn Conrad Brackett taught French classes at SIU and its University High School for 20 years. She spent three very profitable summers in France, while completing her Master’s degree. Gwen was a fine teacher drawing upon Ellen Browning Scripps teaching philosophy that education's paramount obligation is to develop students' ability to think clearly and independently in order to live confidently and courageously. By fostering these abilities in students, the Gwendolyn Conrad Brackett and Isaac Parsons Memorial Scholarship is intended to help students defray their study abroad expenses so that they can experience another country's culture. In her modesty, Gwen wanted no memorial; we hope she would smile, nevertheless, to learn that new generations of students are being helped to study abroad in her name.

Up to $1000.00 will be awarded to provide financial assistance for tuition, books and fees for study abroad to undergraduate student(s) majoring/specializing in French or specializing in French in the International Studies or the Foreign Language and International Trade (FLIT) Program.

 Requirements:

  • Be at least a Junior with either their first major in French, a LCIS major specializing in French or in International Studies or FLIT with French as their foreign language
  • Overall GPA of 2.5 with a minimum 3.0 GPA in his/her degree field
  • Student must submit an essay (500 words max.) about how the study abroad experience will benefit his/her future plans

Application deadline: January 31 - No applications will be accepted past the deadline
