Nine Angels Scholarship

The department will award a new scholarship this spring. The Nine Angels Scholarship will go to a junior in the CCJ program who exhibits promise in the field of criminal justice.

Author and teacher Paul Echols has dedicated all proceeds from his book, In Cold Pursuit (2011), to the endowment of this special scholarship fund. Mr. Echols is an SIU alum and a retired Carbondale police lieutenant who teaches criminal justice at Shawnee Community College.

The scholarship recipient will receive a monetary award and, of course, a copy of the book. In Cold Pursuit chronicles the hunt for serial murderer Timothy Krajcir, who was convicted of killing nine women in this region and Pennsylvania, two of whom were SIU students. Paul Echols was instrumental in tracking Krajcir down and bringing him to justice.

While the book itself will not completely fund the scholarship, family and friends of the victims have contributed to the endowment. Plans are to begin with one scholarship this spring and eventually try to increase the number of scholarships.
