SIU to host Midwest African Conference Nov. 3rd

October 26, 2012

The Midwest African Conference will take place on November 3rd, 2012, from 9:00am–3:00pm, Ballroom D in the Student Center, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Sponsored by the African Student Council and drawing students from across the Midwest, the conference will provide an opportunity to meet and discuss topics concerning the African diaspora and raise awareness about issues currently affecting Africana culture both nationally and globally.

Renowned lecturers will speak on topics ranging from religions and cultures in Africa to helping Africans, as well as other ethnic groups, reach a goal of unity. SIUC’s African Student Council hopes the event will also foster this sense of unity. SIU professors Dr. Leonard Gadzekpo and Dr. Joseph Brown, SJ will speak to the responsibilities of contemporary young Africans and point to the global influence this population might wield. Guest of honor Carbondale Mayor Joel Fritzler will be present to welcome attendees to the city. The university community is invited.
