SIUC SCHOOL OF MUSIC STUDENT NAMED NATIONAL COMPETITION WINNER
On September 25, 2020, B.M. Piano Performance freshman Tom Edgar was notified by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) that he had won first place among a “record number of entries” submitted by students across the United States. The title of his work is, “Spring Awakens, Op. 14”. In the words of the executive director of the program, Christopher Woodside, “to be selected as a winner from this year’s pool of entrants is quite an accomplishment.”
NAfME, partnered with the European American Musical Alliance (EAMA) awarded Edgar with a $500 first prize, in addition to having his work performed by a live musical ensemble. Though this event is usually scheduled to occur in January following the announcement, the event will be postponed until January 2022 because of the current ongoing public health crisis.
The SIU School of Music is overwhelmingly proud of Tom Edgar, and we hope that he will continue to grow musically throughout his time with us.
