The Russians Are Coming!

Orli ShahamThe Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra presents an all-Russian 2017-18 season, with five concerts beginning October 24, 2017 and concluding April 24, 2018, all at Shryock Auditorium on the SIU campus. Titled, “The Russians are Coming!” the Symphony season includes two world renowned soloists in Orli Shaham and Rachel Barton Pine, music by Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Khachaturian, and the complete Nutcracker ballet.

Opening night on Tuesday, October 24 at 7:30pm, begins with excerpts from Sergei Prokofiev’s gorgeous ballet, Romeo and Juliet. Following intermission, the pianist, Orli Shaham (wife of St. Louis Symphony Music Director, David Robertson and sister of internationally acclaimed violinist, Gil Shaham) performs Sergei Rachmaninov’s fabulous Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, all conducted by Music Director, Edward Benyas. Ms. Shaham’s appearance is sponsored by the SIU Fine Arts Activity Fee, and all SIU students are admitted free.
