History Graduate Student Association
All SIU Carbondale History Graduate Students are automatically included in The History Graduate Student Association (HGSA). HGSA’s primary purpose is to represent and serve the History Graduate Student body’s best interests. To achieve this goal, HGSA promotes a professional environment with a community feel through the HGSA Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is an independent, annually-elected body that represents History graduate students throughout the SIU Carbondale campus.
To achieve the goals of HGSA, the Steering Committee partakes in various activities including: frequent roundtable discussions where peers and faculty discuss research for development, workshops geared towards general themes that are important to graduate students, and finally the HGSA conference.
To further assist in the professional/community environment, both the HGSA body and the Steering Committee encourages and actively participates with other on-campus organizations including: the Graduate Assistant Union, the Graduate and Professional Student Council, the SIU Carbondale chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta history undergraduate honor society, and multiple other professional organizations. HGSA not only seeks to enhance professional development within the History department, but also throughout the SIU Carbondale campus.
