Assistantships & Financial Aid
The majority of our graduate students receive some form of funding.
Applicants will be considered for Fellowships and Graduate Research or Teaching Assistantships upon request. Applications for departmental funding will be assessed on the basis of merit. Graduate Assistantships are awarded by the History Department in the spring for the coming academic year. All assistantships carry a full tuition waiver.
Acceptable progress towards a degree and satisfactory performance at TA/GA duties are requirements for annual renewal of funding. Each TA/GA will meet annually with the director of graduate studies for an assessment of their work performance. In most cases, the department provides 2 years of funding for an M.A. and 4 for a Ph.D. A maximum of 48 months of financial support is allowed for Ph.D. students.
In addition to departmental assistantships, the Graduate School offers several special fellowships to students of outstanding merit, or those who have overcome social, cultural, or economic disadvantages. Visit the Graduate School for more information on scholarships and fellowships.
For information about Financial Aid and loans, contact the Financial Aid Office.
Students who enter the program without funding are eligible, after at least one semester in the program, to apply for funding consideration. Such an application must be submitted by January 10 and include an up-to-date transcript and letters of reference from at least 2 professors (at least one of which must be from the history department) with whom the student has worked at SIU Carbondale.
