Smoot Receives Award for Faculty Appreciation

Pamela Smoot

Congratulations to Dr. Pamela Smoot, winner of the 2019 Faculty Appreciation/Recognition Award from the SIU Carbondale chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ-SIU). This award was presented in conjunction with the campus's annual Black History Month.

A well-known and vocal ambassador for retention support through strengthened mentor/student relationships, Dr. Smoot is no stranger to SIU applause. Her longstanding efforts have been publicly recognized by university administration in the past, and her role in previous SIU Black History Month celebrations has ranged from giving scholarly presentations to chairing the entire planning committee.

This year, Smoot kicked off the month's festivities with a speech on the historical significance of African American migration. By the conclusion of the 2019 celebration, however, she found herself the subject of distinction — at a Feb. 27 Black Faculty and Staff Appreciation luncheon, during which local NABJ members honored Smoot for her contributions.
