Dr. Donald S. Detwiler earned his Dr. phil. cum laude at Goettingen University, Germany, in 1961, and joined the SIU faculty in 1967. A specialist in German and Contemporary history, Dr. Detwiler continued to teach a course in twentieth-century dictatorships and global conflict, 1919-1945, and to supervise readings after his retirement in 1998.

He is the chairman of the World War Two Studies Association, the vice-president of the international association with which it is affiliated, and a past president of the Association for the Bibliography of History. He is the principal editor of two multi-volume archival collections, World War II German Military Studies and War in Asia and the Pacific, 1937-1949 (1979 and 1980).

His books include Germany: A Short History, 3rd ed., rev. (1999); and, with Ilse E. Detwiler as joint author, An Annotated Bibliography on Germany (vol. 72, Clio World Bibliographical Series, 1987).
