Scholarship Opportunities for Undergraduates
English offers several scholarship opportunities to its undergraduate students. The generous support of donors makes these awards possible, and they prove invaluable in helping students meet the financial needs of a university education and realize their future goals. Moreover, these scholarships recognize and celebrate the creativity, perseverance, academic achievement, and character of our outstanding undergraduates.
The scholarships offered include the following:
Anne West English Scholarship Fund
Scholarships shall be awarded to needy students of high scholastic standing pursuing courses in English.
Betty and John McDaniels Scholarship Fund
Recipients shall be undergraduate students majoring in English at Southern Illinois University Carbondale who demonstrate financial need.
Carl W. Lutes Outstanding English Major Award Fund
Awarded to a full-time junior or senior majoring in English. The recipient must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. Preference may be given to a senior and a student who is a southern Illinois native. References and a writing sample must be submitted to be eligible for this award.
John and Marsha Ryan Achievement in English Award
Recipient will be an advancing first-year student who has declared their intentions to pursue a degree in English. The recipient shall be in good academic standing, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25. A written letter of recommendation from a faculty member in English is required. The letter must identify the applicant as someone with the potential for excellence in their studies and a demonstrated talent in the study of English.
Kent Haruf Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in English, with a preference given to a student specializing in Creative Writing.
Louis and Monica Petroff Memorial Scholarship (shared with Sociology)
This scholarship is open to outstanding English and Sociology majors. Students must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.5 and be classified as a sophomore or above.
Thelma Louise Kellogg Scholarship
Scholarship should be given to one or more deserving and needy students majoring in English.
William Lewis Farmer Memorial Fund
An annual award for graduate or undergraduate students majoring in English.
To Apply for Scholarships
Undergraduate students who wish to apply for English scholarships must fill out the online general scholarship application posted on SCHOLARSHIPS.SIU.EDU.
When you complete the general application, the program then matches you to every scholarship or opportunity you qualify for and submits your application for you. You may be prompted to answer a few additional questions if you are matched to a scholarship or opportunity with special qualifications.

On the “Applicants and Administrators” tab click on the “Sign In With Your Institution.”

Log into the system using your SIU Network ID and Password.

Now you can complete the general application. The application can be completed in one setting or you may save it and finish it later. However, you must complete the application by midnight on February 1st.

Important:
1) To be considered for any scholarship for which financial need is a requirement, you must fill out (or update) your FAFSA. This can be done at https://studentaid.gov/
2) As part of the general scholarship application, you will be asked to list an English faculty member who can serve as a recommender. In addition to entering this faculty member's name in Academic Works, you must contact that faculty member (either through email or in-person) to ensure they are able and willing to complete the letter of recommendation. Be sure to contact the faculty member directly.
