Literary Magazines & Critical Journals

SIU is home to student-produced literary periodicals, providing space for budding writers and editors alike to present, discuss, review and publish work in settings beyond the framework of a traditional classroom.

Grassroots

The purpose of Grassroots is to provide undergraduate students at SIU Carbondale with the chance to publish their literary efforts. Our staff will evaluate various works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry and publish the very best of them.

For current submission information to Grassroots, please see the last page of the current Grassroots, email us at Grassrootsmag@gmail.com or stop by our office in Faner 2226.

Grassroots sponsors the annual Devil's Kitchen Fall Literary Festival at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, an annual three-day festival featuring readings, panels, and book signings by writers from across the nation.

Grassroots also sponsors the annual Devil's Kitchen Reading Awards in Poetry and Prose. These awards recognize one poet and one prose writer (fiction or literary nonfiction) for a collection of work, a novel, or memoir published in the preceding year.

The Journal of Fantasy and Fan Cultures

The Journal of Fantasy and Fan Cultures is a new journal that seeks to publish the best scholarly and creative non-fiction work on the fantasy genre and its fan cultures by undergraduate and graduate students. The journal is peer-reviewed, produced, and published by undergraduates and graduate students in English at SIU Carbondale.
