Visiting Writer Series
Our Visiting Writers Series brings numerous writers to campus for readings and meetings with students. In addition, two three-day literary festivals take place each year on the SIU Carbondale campus - Devil's Kitchen in the fall and Little Grassy in the spring.
Devil’s Kitchen Literary Festival, held each year in late October or early November and sponsored by SIU Carbondale’s undergraduate journal Grassroots, is a three-day festival of literary readings and panels featuring nationally recognized writers. Recent guests have included James Kimbrell, Honoree Jeffers, Margaret McMullan, David Baker, Ann Townsend, Padgett Powell, Jean Thompson, Anthony Grooms. Amina Gautier, Alyson Hagy, Katherine Riegel, Ira Sukrungruang, Jerry Williams, Brian Barker, Camille Dungy, Katie Chaple, Wally Swist, Daniel Nathan Terry, Marcus Wicker, Patricia Ann McNair, Peter Orner, and many others.
The Little Grassy Literary Festival, held each year in April and sponsored in part by the Graduate Writer's Forum, is a three-day festival of literary readings and and panels featuring nationally recognized writers. Recent guests have included Ross Gay, Peter Ho Davies, Lee Ann Roripaugh, LeAnne Howe, Tyler Mills, Jared Yates Sexton, Henri Cole, Cynthia Huntington, Claire McQuerry, Geoff Schmidt, Elizabeth Crane, Traci Brimhall, Jake Adam York, Carolyn Forche, David Clewell, Ben Percy, Drew Perry, Todd Hearon, Jennifer Richter, and many others.
