Graduate
Graduate education in English at SIU Carbondale provides a course of study leading to the MA, MFA, and PhD degrees in literature, rhetoric and composition, and creative writing. Students benefit from a wide range of specializations, including medieval and Renaissance literature, British literature (18th, 19th and 20th centuries), American literature (19th century and modern), literary theory, cultural studies, gender studies, writing studies, popular culture, and creative writing in fiction and poetry.
Almost all of our graduate students receive financial support in the form of graduate assistantships. Graduate assistants teach first-year composition, advanced writing, and some literature classes, work as tutors in the writing center, or serve as administrative assistants in the English program. Students have the opportunity to work as interns on a wide-variety of projects, gaining experience in teaching and literary publishing. In short, we strive to offer the variety of professional experiences that will help graduate students to be competitive on the job market.
If you are a prospective student, we hope that you'll consider applying to the English program after reviewing our program and faculty strengths.
