Undergraduate Studies

Whether you are interested in a single course to help you understand crime, a minor to add to your expertise, or a major to get you on your way to a career as a criminologist or with a criminal justice agency, we welcome you in our courses. We offer both a Bachelor of Arts degree and undergraduate minors in Criminology and Criminal Justice and Forensic Science. The BA degree is the preferred degree for many positions in criminal justice, including various jobs in crime prevention, policing, court administration, and institutional and community corrections.

The CCJ Department also offers an Online Program. Contact the departmental advisor for more information.

Our curriculum includes the requisite core education in the field of criminology and criminal justice as well as many options from which students may choose substantive courses in career areas that interest them most. The BA degree requires a minor, and we encourage students to choose among many interesting options at SIU that can help to provide supplemental expertise and distinguish them from among their peers. In addition to our regular course offerings, we provide courses that enable you to explore special topics and current issues in more depth. Look for these on the schedule each semester. We also offer internships with criminal justice agencies and a variety of research experiences.

High achieving undergraduate students may take advantage of our accelerated MA program, enabling them to earn a BA and MA in five years. Students admitted to the program will start taking graduate courses during their senior year, saving time and money on their graduate education.

For the most effective college experience, CCJ students should aim to participate in activities outside the classroom too. We recommend professional and service activities that are looked upon favorably by prospective employers. Both the Criminal Justice Association, a RSO sponsored by the Department, and the Alpha Phi Sigma honor society provide valuable opportunities. Also be sure to attend when we offer special lectures or conferences.
