Aldon Addington came to Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1967 and taught sculpture and 3D design until his retire-ment in 2001. While at the University he also gave many metal sculpture workshops, including ones at the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland, and the University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland. During the summers of the 1980s, he gave workshops and demonstrations at Art Park in Lewiston, New York. His art is represented at Cedarhurst Sculpture Park, the Illinois State Museum, and the University of Lapland as well as in private collections.
Since his retirement, he has become even more active as a sculptor. From 2007 to 2009, his stainless steel sculpture, "Philosopher," was shown at the Jackson, Michigan, Riverwalk Trail as part of the city's public art program. In 2006, his stainless steel sculpture “Rings of Friendship,” was installed in Carbondale's Friendship Park. “Symphony in Steel,” a large-scale, hanging sculpture, commissioned by the Illinois Art-in-Architecture program for the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was installed in the Mechanical Engineering Building in 2005.
