Goal:

The purpose and mission of the mentorship program is to partner freshmen, transfer students, or
other mentee applicants with an experienced upperclassman to promote professional, academic,
and social growth both within and outside of the organization.

Being a Mentor:

Mentor Eligibility

Mentors will be selected by the Advisor and a panel of faculty based on their applications. All
majors will be welcome to apply.

Applicant Expectations:

  • Junior (non-transfer) or Senior students
  • Should demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement and/or public service
  • Should demonstrate involvement on campus
  • Should demonstrate experience in the public policy sphere
  • Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must be an Active Member of WPPCE

Mentor Responsibilities

Mentors will fulfill a spectrum of responsibilities to ensure the success of their mentee(s).

  • Academic Navigation
    • Connecting mentee with related professors
    • Assisting mentee through study sessions as needed
    • Introducing mentee to helpful campus resources
    • Giving course recommendations
  • Campus Involvement
    • Will introduce mentees to potential RSOs of interest
    • Will assist mentee with accessing community service opportunities
    • Will educate mentee on obtaining leadership positions
  • Professional Development
    • Will assist will mentee resume building
    • Will encourage navigation of internship opportunities
    • Will highlight research opportunities
    • Will introduce mentees to a larger network of people in their field
  • Personal Support

Mentor Requirements

Mentors will be expected to complete specific tasks to maintain their role. These will include:

  • Attending semester mentor training
  • Meeting with mentee once a month
  • Attend at least one WPPCE event with mentee per semester
  • Complete end-of-semester check in

Mentor Service Hours

For their service, mentors will be permitted to collect up to 15 service hour credits per semester.

Service hours that can be submitted:

  • Mentor training
  • Monthly meeting with mentee
  • WPPCE event attendance with mentee
  • Other hours spent with mentees outside of social events (tutoring, final study session, interview practice, etc.)

In order to be accepted, service hours and their descriptions must be logged and submitted to the
President and Advisor of WPPCE to sign. After that point, hours can be submitted to the CSLV
or the Honors Program.

Being a Mentee:

Mentee Eligibility

Mentees will be selected and paired with their mentor by collaboration of the Board and the
Advisor. All majors are welcome to apply:

Application Expectations

  • Preference given to freshmen or transfer students
  • Must demonstrate academic success
  • Must demonstrate desire to enroll in the program
  • Must demonstrate intention to join WPPCE as an Active Member
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to engage with the program and their mentor

Mentee Requirements

Mentees will be expected to complete specific tasks to stay in the program. These will include:

  • Attending mentee orientation
  • Meeting with mentor once a month
  • Attend at least one WPPCE event with mentor per semester
  • Complete end-of-semester reflection

Pairing Mentee and Mentor:

Mentees and Mentors will be paired by the Board and/or the Advisor upon their acceptance into
the program. Mentees and Mentors will be matched based on a variety of categories:

  • Major(s)/Minor(s)
  • Career goals
  • Internship/research experience
  • Areas of interest/expertise
  • Other factors the Board/Advisor finds relevant
