Requirements

The program requires an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 for admission to the M.A. degree program and a graduate GPA of 3.25 for admission to the Ph.D. degree program. Applicants to the Ph.D. program must have a residential two-year M.A. degree in sociology (or closely related field). GRE scores are required for admission and consideration for university-wide fellowships. International students must achieve 550 or better on TOEFL scores. To apply on-line visit gradschool.siu.edu/apply/ and submit a purpose statement (with some discussion of research experience and/or interest), a writing sample, a curriculum vita, and official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate academic grades. Also list email addresses for three references who will be automatically contacted to submit letters. Applications are due by January 1.

Deadlines

  • January 1: application must be received to be considered for a Master’s fellowship, a Graduate Dean’s fellowship, or a PROMPT assistantship. The following criteria are associated with these fellowships
    •  Master's Fellowship
      • Eligibility Criteria
        1. An overall undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.40 (A=4)
        2. Or an undergraduate grade point average for the last two years of at least 3.40 (A=4)
        3. Or a score at or above the 75th percentile on a standardized test such as the GRE, MAT, or GMAT (copy must be attached).
      • Award Criteria
        1. The assessment by the program of the nominee's abilities and achievements including honors and publications.
        2. Overall undergraduate and graduate grade point averages.
        3. Strength of letters of recommendation.
        4. Personal statement of the student.
        5. Standardized Test scores (required).
    • Graduate Dean's Fellowship (for both MAs and PhDs)
      • Eligibility Criteria
        1. Unconditional admission to either a master's or doctoral degree program.
        2. An earned degree(s) from an accredited institution of higher learning.
        3. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (A=4) on approximately the last 60 hours of undergraduate work (or the last 45 hours if the student has not graduated), and, when appropriate, a graduate grade point average of 3.25.
        4. A member of a traditionally underserved group (as outlined by IBHE).
        5. A citizen or permanent resident/immigrant of the United States.
      • Award Criteria
        1. The assessment by the program of the nominee's abilities, achievements, and promise for success in Graduate School.
        2. Overall undergraduate and graduate grade point averages. Scores on standard tests such as GRE, MAT, or GMAT will be considered as appropriate.
        3. Strength of letters of recommendation from persons who are familiar with nominee's academic record and who are qualified to judge his/her promise for success in the program.
        4. Academic indicators of potential, other than grade point average or test scores, such as honors, publications, and awards.
        5. Sociology's commitment to provide a half-time assistantship appointment to the academically successful applicant in his/her second year of graduate study.
    • PROMPT Assistantship
      • Eligibility Criteria
        1. A new incoming student who has been unconditionally admitted to either a master's or doctoral degree program.
        2. An earned degree(s) from an accredited institution of higher learning.
        3. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (A=4) on approximately the last 60 hours of undergraduate work (or the last 45 hours if the student has not graduated), and, when appropriate, a graduate grade point average of 3.25.
        4. A member of a traditionally underrepresented group.
        5. A U.S. citizen.
      • Award Criteria
        1. The assessment by the program of the nominee's abilities, achievements, and promise for success in Graduate School.
        2. Overall undergraduate and graduate grade point averages. Scores on standard tests such as GRE, MAT or GMAT will be considered as appropriate.
        3. Strength of letters of recommendation from persons who are familiar with nominee's academic record and who are qualified to judge his/her promise for success in the program.
        4. Academic indicators of potential, other than grade point average or test scores, such as honors, publications, and awards.
        5. Sociology's commitment to participate in the "1+1" match or the shared assistantship.

  • February 15: application must be received to be considered for a Sociology graduate assistantship
  • March 1: all applications must be received by this date
