Info for Applicants
The Political Science graduate program welcomes applications from students in the United States and other countries. Consider these reasons why our department might be right for you:
Our faculty: Trained at top research universities in United States, our faculty members are accomplished scholars and teachers, dedicated to providing a stimulating and challenging environment for our students as well as advancing knowledge in political science. Browse the bios on our faculty page to see our specializations and publications.
Mentoring: We see graduate students as colleagues-in-training. Students have easy access to faculty and enjoy opportunities to study and do research in individualized formats. Seminars typically have six to a dozen students and close contact between students and faculty is the norm. For doctoral students, we welcome your collaboration on our research and encourage you to develop your own courses so that you can grow into life-long colleagues.
Methodology: As important as what you study is how you study it. From your first course in research design through your dissertation, we place great emphasis on methodological rigor. You are encouraged to value different methodologies so that you can select the best tools for your own research. This training makes our graduates especially well-trained for academic employment.
Results: Graduate school is not just about getting a degree; it is about establishing a career. We therefore mentor you from your first day through graduation so that you are prepared to succeed in your chosen career, whether as a political scientist, public servant or in another profession. As you finish your studies, we continue working with you to help you achieve your own unique goals. Our placement record is outstanding: nearly all recent Ph.D. graduates who have pursued academic careers at SIUC have attained university or college positions.
