Curriculum

The Paralegal Studies program requires that each semester you meet with your faculty advisor in order to register for classes. All of our courses are restricted to Paralegal Studies Majors and Minors, so you must meet with us in order to get the restrictions lifted. You can contact our office staff at 618-453-1234 to make your appointments.

Our curriculum follows the guidelines of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Paralegals. There are three essential components: the University Core Curriculum, required paralegal specific courses, and administration courses. The Core Curriculum refers to common courses that all SIU Carbondale students must take, such as English, math, speech, etc.

The paralegal studies curriculum provides two alternative tracks. You can focus on becoming a professional paralegal or pursue a pre-law specialization for going on to law school. The only difference between pre-law and general paralegal will be in support courses taken. The students who plan to go to law school would be encouraged to take as many writing courses as possible along with more theory courses. The traditional paralegal major is required to have more of a technical background so they are required to complete additional computer courses and business courses. The program has been a successful major for a variety of careers and for preparation for law school.

Minor in Paralegal Studies

A minor in paralegal studies is offered and requires 15 semester hours which must include Paralegal Studies 300a, 305, and 310. The remaining six hours should be chosen from among Paralegal Studies 300b, 315, 320, 325, 330, 335, 345, 350, 360, 370, or 380. The paralegal minor is not intended to prepare a student for a career as a paralegal. The minor is not ABA-approved.
