SUMMER TEMPORARY STAFF

Summer Temp position at Schlichter Bogard & Denton, LLP in downtown St. Louis. Applicant needs to speak Spanish and be prepared to start as soon as possible. The position will involve a lot of document production, review of medical and academic records, and preparation of records for distribution to defense counsel. The position also requires communicating with local counsel in Peru (the country). We represent about 1,500 Peruvian children (now young adults) in a personal injury case whose St. Louis- and New York-based defendants allegedly poisoned them with lead and other pollutants causing severe mental and physical damage. AMERICORPS VISTA VOLUNTEER

Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, Inc. (Land of Lincoln) is seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer to assist with the development of a Medical-Legal Partnership between Land of Lincoln and the Marion Veteran’s Administration Healthcare facility.  The position is a one year term (Summer/Fall 2017-Summer/Fall 2018).  This position includes a monthly stipend of approximately $973, a $200 monthly rent stipend, student loan forbearance/deferment, and a choice of either a $1500 end-of-service stipend or $5700 educational award, which can be used for past loans or for future education.  Qualifications include a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in work experience, preferably in the field of paralegal studies, social work or a health care field; an understanding of the issues faced by low-income veterans and a willingness to work with this population to address their legal issues; competency in both Word and Excel; and a willingness to be a team player and work in a team environment. 

The goal of MLP-VA will be to improve the health outcomes for our veterans by alleviating legal stressors, such as housing issues, Social Security Disability, public benefits issues such as the receipt of food stamps, family law issues, etc.  The partnership will be based at the Southern Regional Office of Land of Lincoln in Carbondale, Illinois, with on-site hours at the VA in Marion, Illinois as well.  The goal of the VISTA position is to work with the newly hired staff attorney whose sole focus is to establish and develop this new medical-legal partnership, to get it up and running, and establish systems and protocols that will be used for many years to come.

STAFF ATTORNEY

Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation's Southern Regional Office seeks a Staff Attorney.

Resposibilities include: Legal assistance and representation of low and moderate income veterans through the development of a Medical-Legal Partnership with the Marion Veterans Administration Healthcare facility in Marion, Illinois as well as possible representation of active duty military. Practice areas include but are not limited to family, housing, public benefits, and consumer law. Participation in community legal education and outreach are a significant part of these responsibilities.

Qualifications include: Illinois license. Demonstrated commitment to representation of low-income individuals. Prior legal services experience preferred. Previous experience in the Armed Forces a plus.

Program description: Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation is a non-profit organization which provides free legal services to low-income individuals and groups in civil cases through five (5) branch offices in central and southern Illinois. The program has a strong history of high quality and innovative advocacy for our clients. The Southern Regional Office is located in Carbondale.

Salary: $45,000 and up dependent on experience. Excellent fringe benefits.

LEGAL ASSISTANT

The Missouri State Public Defender System is accepting applications for a Legal Assistant in the Cape Girardeau Trial Office. Individual will assist attorneys with client intake interviews and case preparation. Duties will also include locating/copying discovery materials; organizing and summarizing client files; contacting/interviewing clients and witnesses; preparing reports and serving subpoenas; conducting limited legal research; and assisting attorneys in court and with other tasks.

Qualifications: Education equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of experience in office or related clerical work. Legal experience preferred.
