Junghwa Lee and Frank Stemper (emeritus): Fanfare review and release of Blue 13
September 25, 2015
Pianist Junghwa Lee, School of Music, and Composer Frank Stemper, faculty emeritus, were treated to a rave review on the release of their new CD, Blue 13, by Fanfare magazine. The major work on the disc is Stemper’s Piano Sonata No. 2, a four-movement work on death and life which he wrote especially for Lee.
The piece is described by the reviewer as a “masterwork”—and Lee’s playing “a wondrous thing to hear.” Reviewer David DeBoor Canfield notes that the virtuosity required by Stemper is met by Lee with seeming ease, the musicians working together hand in glove. You can listen to the opening work, “Global Warning” (2007) below.
