Be Inspired! SIU Theater 2015-16 Tickets Now On Sale

September 01, 2015

The box office for the SIU Department of Theater 2015-2016 season is officially open. Come join us, and be inspired. The four show subscription series includes “The Addams Family,” “Beyond the Horizon,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Tartuffe.” Not included in the subscription series is one special production, the “Big Muddy New Play Festival 2016.”

“The Addams Family” is a “spooktacular” double-finger-snapping musical based on characters created in single-panel cartoons by Charles Addams. It has music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa and book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. The cartoon first appeared in The New Yorker magazine in 1940 and continued through Addams’ death in 1988. The family members were not given names till the creation of the television show in 1966, which lasted only two years but made the “unusual” family internationally famous. In this musical, the torture-loving daughter, Wednesday, falls in love with a “normal” guy, inviting him and his parents to meet her “goth-like” clan. The production plays Oct. 22-25 in the McLeod Theater and is co-produced with the SIU School of Music.

“Beyond the Horizon” is the first full-length play written by American Theater great Eugene O’Neill and was winner of the 1920 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In this insightful and gripping story, two brothers change destinies when they discover they are in love with the same woman. Love, like a dream, can be a shifting thing, and the characters must accept reality instead of the dream that lies beyond the horizon. The production plays Dec. 10-13.

“Hansel and Gretel” is an opera by German composer Engelbert Humperdinck based on the Brothers Grimm Fairy tale. First produced in 1893, the opera is the fantastical tale of a young brother and sister, who are left in the woods and captured by a gingerbread-baking witch. This family opera plays Feb. 26-28 in the English translation by Constance Bache. The opera is co-produced with the SIU School of Music and features the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra. Patrons are asked to note that there is no Thursday evening performance for this production.

“Tartuffe,” the classic scandal-laced comedy by Moliere, closes the season series. In this delightful rhymed-couplet translation by Richard Wilbur, a pretentious and pious imposter claims he is guided by God, and infiltrates a wealthy household with a plan to seize the family’s fortune - and the patriarch’s virtuous daughter. It’s up to the family to expose the hypocrisy and save the family’s fate. The comedy performs April 28–May 1.

Performances are Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. (except as noted) in the McLeod Theater. Tickets for the series are $62 adult/$24 student. Individual tickets are $18 adult, $6 student.

The 2016 Big Muddy New Play Festival, in the C.H. Moe Theater, features new works by SIU playwrights and consists of one fully-mounted production and several staged readings of new plays. The titles are TBA. The festival performs March 31–April 3, with the featured production on the same performance schedule as the season. Tickets to the fully mounted production are $18 adults, $6 student. Staged readings are free with seating on a first-come first-served basis.

Season tickets can be obtained in person at the Arena or McLeod Theater box office, Monday-Friday, noon-4:30 p.m. (except University holidays), by mail, or by phone at 618/453-6000. Individual tickets are also available online at theater.siu.edu.
