Financial Assistance

There are several forms of financial assistance available to graduate students in the Department of Communication Studies:

Departmental Assistantships: All applicants will be considered for an assistantship unless the applicant indicates that he or she does not want funding. Assistantships require up to twenty hours per week of service in teaching or research. Students who are awarded a graduate teaching assistantship are required to take CMST 539: Communication Studies at the University Level.

The graduate School has more information on cost and financial assistance.

Graduate Fellowships are competitive University awards. In particular, the Department encourages applicants to consider the following opportunities:

  • Morris Fellowship
  • Doctoral Fellowship
  • Master’s Fellowship
  • Graduate Dean’s Fellowship
  • PROMPT Assistantship

The stipends for the above awards are competitive. All the appointments, fellowships, and assistantships also include a waiver of tuition (both in-state and out-of-state) for the student. Students who hold appointments for two consecutive semesters also receive a tuition waiver for the following summer session. Students are responsible for student fees.

Completed applications for Graduate Fellowships should be received by January 15 for appointment for the subsequent fall semester.
