Financial assistance is available to qualified students in all fields of study in the form of:

  1. Graduate Assistantships (where one serves as a classroom teacher or assistant, as a research assistant, or as an administrative assistant)

  2. Fellowships or Traineeships

  3. Scholarships

  4. Federal Work-Study Programs

  5. Loans (there are basic regulations that relate to these awards)

  6. Windgate Charitable Foundation Graduate Research Grants are awarded to current graduate students in the SIU School of Art and Design to offset research expenses (materials, publications, etc.) or the costs of study at specialized institutions other than SIU (e.g. Penland, Pilchuck, Smithsonian Institution). Amount of award varies. Due October 15 and March 15.

    • Windgate Graduate Research Grant Application. Access to this online application requires applicants to sign-in/login to SlideRoom. Completion of this application requires uploads including research proposal (identifying what, where, etc.), resume, itemized budget, outcome/benefit statement (other than MFA Thesis exhibition), larger research goals statement, and as many as 5 examples of work.

Students should make application for graduate assistantships, fellowships, or traineeships through the department to which they have been admitted. Information and application forms for the tuition scholarship program may be obtained from the Graduate School office. Information regarding the federal work-study program and loans may be obtained by contacting the SIUC Financial Aid Office.


Professional Development Fellowships

CAA (College Art Association) awards five Professional Development Fellowships in the Visual Arts of $5,000 each to outstanding students who will receive MFA degrees. Eligibility requirements and application guidelines will be available on the CAA website. These are annual awards. Deadline is typically early October.
