Associate Professor, Ceramics, Head of Undergraduate Studies
Pattie Chalmers is a ceramic sculptor who creates narrative tableaus using images culled from childhood tales, four-for-a-dollar comic books, movies-of-the-week, and personal experience. Her work is a collage of these influences in combination with historical and fanciful elements that reveal her observations about identity, ideologies and our humanity.
Even though Ms. Chalmers primarily works within the realm of figurative ceramic sculpture, she also engages in a variety of other approaches, resulting in the appearance of a somewhat frenetic studio practice. Narrative is the linchpin. Ms. Chalmers is inherently an explainer and a storyteller and through her work attempts to map her experiences to give better understanding to others and herself.
Ms. Chalmers was born and grew up in Winnipeg, Canada. She received her BFA in printmaking from the University of Manitoba in 1994, and her MFA in ceramics from the University of Minnesota in 2001. She has exhibited in 22 states and on 4 continents and since she began teaching at SIU in 2006 has had work in over 70 exhibitions.
