Ulrich H. Reichard

Associate Professor

 My empirical work focuses on the primate community of Khao Yai National Park, Thailand, where my students and I study white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar), pileated gibbons (Hylobates pileatus), and northern pig-tailed macaques (Macaca leonina). We continuously monitor individual life histories and collect demographic data. Specific current projects on white-handed gibbons include: behavioral responses to simulated predators, population-level relatedness, sleeping patterns, individuality of song repertoires, and spatial intelligence.

Research Interests

I am interested in relationships between ecology, behavior, and cognition in primates from an evolutionary perspective.

My research is comparative in nature using nonhuman primates as a model to provide data and answers to questions about the evolutionary pressures that have shaped us, humans.

Recent Fieldwork

In collaboration with Dr. Claudia Barelli (http://www.muse.it/en/il-muse/chi-siamo/staff/pages/Claudia-Barelli.aspx), I direct the field research on white-handed gibbons of Khao Yai, Thailand. The population has been subject to longitudinal research for nearly three decades and the project is ongoing. To facilitate research we maintain a small field station where students and volunteers are welcome to acquire field work experience or collect data for Master’s and Ph.D. degrees. Over the years, more than a dozen groups of gibbons have habituated to the presence of human observers, which allows us to collect data across many social units and individuals. We accept talented, highly motivated students and volunteers to working with us through SIU Carbondale, the German Primate Center (DPZ) or in collaboration with other institutions.
